Microcrete

Good news or the bad news….?

The good news is that we have finished flooring on the ground floor. A gorgeous pebble coloured micro cement finish. We used micro cement as a cheaper alternative to polished concrete flooring, which our budget could not stretch to. Basically, it’s a thin top layer of modified cement that goes above the screed substrate flooring.

It’s not for everyone (I’m already anticipating the question ‘so what will you be doing with the floor here, then?’), but I love how flawed, raw and honest it looks. It’s not slick, there are loads of areas that look like they were probably errors, but it just makes me love it even more. It’s a little ode to our journey over the last two years, and heck, if we start to hate it, we can easily throw on some good ol’ laminate and classify the mico cement as an ‘experiment’.

Having the finished floor also meant that we were FINALLY able to remind ourselves what the sofa we bought last year looked like (it has been sitting in the house all wrapped up and alone since Janaury poor thing).

Okay. So, the bad news?

We endured two weeks of faffing around from the sub-contractor, a false start due to incorrect prep work, and the triggering of our smoke alarms due to the amount of dust billowing around the house while they redid the prep work.

And, while we have a finished ground floor, we also have micro cement where we didn’t ask for it, all over our courtyard tiles. Yup, cement footprints and splashes have been thrown in for free.

Yay for us : )

Do not fear; I’ll turn this into a little shit sandwich. The other slice of good news is that we are so, so, so close to the ‘end’ now.
