Design Sessions
We finally had time to sit down and figure out the purpose of our rooms in the basement. The toilet/shower/utility room was pretty self-explanatory, but we have really struggled to nail exactly what the rest of the space will be used for. We know what we needed storage, a place to work from home, a quiet space for reading or yoga and a space we can socialise with friends…. loudly, but we didn’t know how these needs would come together in a space that would actually make any sense.
So, as people do when they need to solve serious problems, we poured wine.
[Unrelated side note: as I type this someone is outside blasting Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl from their flat or car… Man, I’ll miss this place.]
I really enjoyed the brainstorming, debates, various iterations drawn on tracing paper (and all the wine) that got us to a solution that I think is quite lovely. I’ll share more on this soon, but for now, I will say that my highlight is a corner seat in the darkest place of the basement that will have a direct visual connection to the sky through a section of glass floor above it and a skylight above that. I think it has the potential to be an incredibly special part of the house.
Full disclaimer. Remember last week when I said I was being the ‘rational one’ and was waving goodbye to a section of walk-on glass floor on the ground floor so we could avoid financial ruin….? Yeah. I drank from the architectural cool-aid and I’m all in.
The accountant in me has made cuts elsewhere though, the budget has to balance, baby!
