Deals

I’m already starting to forget the moments of madness that have occurred during this build project so as things come back to me, I’m writing it down. This is so I can look back and make an objective assessment of the carnage if there ever came a time when my rose tinted glasses are firmly on my face and I entertain the idea of doing it again.

After realising that brand new furniture is for people that can already afford windows and doors, we started looking for bargains. We quickly stumbled on a great deal for a dining table on gumtree - a table we’d been eying on made.com but for a fraction of the price. Nice! With some decent chairs thrown in. Sweet baby Jesus, thank you!

After a flurry of messages we managed to secure the deal and scheduled a pick up for the same evening, with the idea that we’d be back in time to pick our child up from her Nana’s only an hour or so later than usual. Ha.

No zip vans were available, so we Googled the dimensions of the largest car available, decided that it was close enough and hoped for the best. When we got the to sellers house we spent about 30 mins dismantling the table (while we all stood around making awkward socially distanced small talk), and a further 20 mins taking it down the lift and loading (read stuffing) it into the car. We stood around briefly feeling proud then loaded ourselves into the car. Oh dear. in order to fit the table and chairs into the boot we had to pull the driving seat so far forward that there was no possible way Lanre would be able to drive without his torso attempting to fuse with the steering wheel. So we got back out of the car, pulled the table and chairs out with us and reassembled.

I’ve already moaned about how little space we have at the flat, so there was no chance we could store it there, so we spent about 45 mins in the dark trying to squish it all into my father in laws garage (draped carefully in old bed linen for protection), drove back to drop off the zip car, collect our car and drive to my parents to pick up my poor child who’d been waiting by the window for us to collect her, had grown worried as it fell dark and and had fallen asleep in the hopelessness of it all.

I’m actually too scared to check what kind of damage the table sustained in our poor quality transit... really hoping the wahala (trouble) was worth it!
